Modern building, innovative interior concept

Complete interior design enabled by an innovative vision

The International School Monaco (ISM) has moved into the remarkable ‘Testimonio II’ building, a modern new complex styled in the spirit of the Principality of Monaco, with stunning views over the Mediterranean Sea. The request for classroom designs for the ‘Primary’ department immediately inspired us: such a unique location deserves an innovative educational concept! ISM was so enthusiastic about our vision presentation that we were also given the opportunity to design the early years classrooms, cafeteria, offices, wellbeing and meeting spaces, and locker setups.

Biophilic ocean theme

The desired ocean theme inspired our design team to create various color and material concepts based on biophilic principles. We introduced differentiation by using predominantly natural, shell-like tones and textures to give the learning environments a neutral foundation. The nautilus shell is represented with a graphic translation in the acoustic Felt panels on the walls. These sound-dampening panels ensure good acoustics and contribute to the wellbeing of all users.

Our interpretation of a coral reef is reflected in the selection of rich colors and materials within ISM’s workspaces, subtly highlighting the diversity in zones, activities, and nationalities. Seating elements are upholstered with sustainable fabrics featuring appealing textures, and the organically shaped rugs and group tables have a welcoming design language.

Flexibility at the core

Alongside biophilic design, flexibility was also essential. With reconfigurable spaces and furniture set at a single height, the functionality of the interior is always aligned with user needs. The multifunctional spaces and calming design help prevent cognitive overstimulation, supporting learning and focus.

ISM was immediately enthusiastic: ‘The furniture perfectly aligns with our vision of flexible, modern learning environments. The designs have greatly enhanced our learning and workspaces, and both staff and students are thrilled with the results.’

Professional collaborations

We collaborated with ISM in a solution-oriented way. Storage space was a challenge, for which we provided suitable solutions through various storage options from De Lockerfabriek. The long-distance delivery was managed seamlessly thanks to strong cooperation between our transport and installation teams and local teams. With professional coordination of access routes, careful planning for moving in, and detailed delivery schedules, a smooth delivery and ready-to-use installation were ensured.

Sustainability and quality

In our design, we focused extensively on sustainable and circular solutions. In various areas, we placed furniture made from 100% recycled and recyclable materials, such as the Finn, Be Hybrid, and Felt collections. Items from Re-Felt (felt made from reused textiles) also contribute to acoustic quality.

Perhaps what ISM appreciated most was this constant focus on sustainability: ‘The commitment to sustainable, responsible business practices is evident, not only through innovative design solutions but also in the use of sustainable materials and processes. This aligns perfectly with our own values and future vision. Furthermore, the product quality has exceeded our expectations; the furniture provided is of the highest standard.’

The result

The unique, modern Testimonio II location has been outfitted with a flexible design featuring a light, natural aesthetic. Many custom-made concepts are tailored to both the building and ISM’s specific student group.
