Hidden gem in the greenery
Tucked away among the greenery in Nijmegen-Oost lies the beautiful monumental building that houses De Muze. The building has a rich history and was originally used as a military school. After a complete renovation, the building has been completely transformed to meet all modern functional requirements. With a contemporary interior design that suits the building, we were able to contribute to De Muze’s educational environment combining respect for the past with future-oriented education.

Past and renewal
The De Muze school building is part of the LIMOS barracks site dating from 1905. It was already an educational location at that time, but a completely different one: the Air Force Instruction and Military Training School. After conscription was suspended in 1995, new uses were sought. One of these was OBS De Muze, which opened its doors here in 1996. After almost 30 years, a large-scale renovation in 2024/25 was needed to ensure that the building would continue to meet all requirements in the future. The building has been given a new layout that is more spacious and practical, has been made sustainable to energy label A and meets the “Fresh Schools class B” standard, which guarantees a healthy and comfortable environment for pupils and teachers.
Fresh, functional, harmonious
Despite all the modifications, the appearance has been preserved as much as possible and, in some cases, even restored to the monumental appearance of the previous century. This naturally calls for a fresh, functional interior design that matches the special character of this location! To achieve the most harmonious whole, we entered into a partnership with De Comb. While they focused on an interior design that does justice to the monumental building, we actively contributed ideas for solutions that support De Muze’s educational activities. This resulted in an interior with many functionally well-thought-out applications that fit in well with the daily practice of teachers and pupils.
‘Never been so beautiful!’
The building is divided into different “quarters”, such as the “Study Quarter” with new classrooms and a learning plaza, and the “Play Quarter”, the playroom and gym for the youngest children. “Parada” is the improved auditorium, a large, light-filled space with a stage that spans the width of the room, video screens and professional lighting. The “Creatiefort” is the studio for creative and technical skills, and cooking lessons take place in the “Field Kitchen” space. Spaces such as the studio, but also the team room, are good examples of pleasant, inspiring places in both use and appearance. The spaces are therefore experienced as very pleasant by the users: ‘Our school building has never been so beautiful!
What the school appreciated was the overall collaboration and, in particular, the clear communication and our active role in contributing ideas for solutions throughout the entire process. We can only agree that the collaboration was very pleasant. We are proud of the final result we achieved together and hope that De Muze will have a future in this building that is at least as rich as the history of the building itself!
